Opinion: People take Pub quizzes far too seriously, and so do I

The famous pub quiz, one of Britain's greatest achievements spawned in from the British obsession for drinking alcohol. I had never been to a pub quiz before I went to university due to the lack of decent pubs in my area, and any of the ones that are decent being filled with old people with some very questionable views.

Even during my first year I had only gone to a few pub quizzes and I needed my new flatmates in the second year to get me out to more. Even with my lack of general knowledge my Autism gives me a good gift of knowing things about random subjects from the boots that footballers wear to places in obscure countries no one has ever heard of.

Although, when I go to these quizzes expecting a fun night with my friends as we duel others who we will probably never know in a game of intellectual chess it makes me realise how seriously some people take it.

One of my most recent stories I have from a quiz was that there is a round of it devoted to a random challenge whether it be a hot sauce shot or blindfold darts. The round which I competed on was a plank challenge which I was surprisingly excited for which is likely the first time anyone has been positively moved by the challenge of a plank.

Me and several others lay there and over the course of at least a minute and a half of this there were only three people left including myself. During this though, a random man in a Borussia Dortmund shirt who was not fit enough to even attempt it kept shouting abuse at me and saying that I was doing it wrong multiple times even with the hand of the judge underneath me.

Thankfully I beat his teammate in that challenge and his team would go on to win nothing at the end of it which put a big smile on my face. That night made me take a look at myself and realise in fact how much that a correct answer or winning a challenge in a pub quiz means to some people.

It made me realise that it means a lot to me too. Whenever there is a topic that I even have a tiny piece of knowledge about, my brain suddenly goes into overdrive to try and input the correct answer. The sadness when I realise the answer that I have put is so wrong that Helen Keller had more of a chance of getting it right.

I absolutely love that feeling.

Even my flatmates take it seriously. It only takes the quizmaster to say our team's name at the start for one of them to scream out in what could be mistaken as victory cheer. When another team wins we make snarky comments about them to try and remove the thought of us losing cleanly and make them into the bad people even though the bad people are probably us.

I only take two things seriously in life, football and quizzes. I try my best to not take life seriously and I enjoy living like that. However, sometimes I have to make exceptions and this is one of those exceptions.

I am glad that I have been taken to more of these because I do not drink and so I get to see everyone else on other teams go into a drunken annoyance when they realise that Ariana Grande was not a character in the film Inside Out.

Admittedly I am not the biggest fan of quizzes as it can show my lack of intelligence about certain topics to the world where I will get taunted for life. That was something that the education system taught me through the likes of Kahoot and other quizzing websites because I did not know maths or another irrelevant subject.

In theory, I should absolutely despise any kind of quiz and avoid them as though the only thing that the people inside wanted to do was make fun of me and let me embarrass myself. Yet, those things make me love the quiz more and want to get involved more even though I probably will never win anything.

So if you have never been to one, go. Go to your local and set one up if you have to. Get too involved in it and enjoy it. Even if you lose, just remember that it is not your fault and the people that beat you cheated and you will have an amazing time.
